Bush Shows Economists the Door—Literally

It hasn’t received much play in the press, but the Bush administration has reassigned the president’s top economic advisors to Washington’s equivalent of Siberia. The Council of Economic Advisers will soon vacate their prestigious digs, right next door to the White House, for space a couple of blocks away. The White House is citing security concerns, but the move highlights the Bush administration’s attitude toward serious economic analysis—indifferent, if not downright hostile.

The Council of Economic Advisers was created in the Truman administration to provide the president with an independent source for economic analysis. The Council consists of three members, including a chairman. The three members, who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, are usually well-known academics on leave from their institutions. The members usually serve a year or two, and then move on.
